Thanks alot Sickboy79 and Private Hell. I appreciate all of the info. I hear you Wolfpits... it's a constant quest for the perfect tone. Your setup is similar to mine, except obviously the twin reverb is quite a bit bigger.

I use the 63 brunette digitech good monkey pink and purple poka-dot ion with a luke-warm plate where the low end is dull and plug all that into my toaster. That seems to really get the sound I want. I have also heard you can launch the Space Shuttle with this hookup too.

I'm just kidding, guys. I think guitar players are HOT!

Another thing to consider is the type of master volume circuit you are talking about. Most typical setups run full power to the pre-amp and then attentuate the signal that goes to the output stage. If you are really concerned about matching tone, the work that the output tubes do is a big part of that. I'm not saying it wouldn't work, I'm just saying its a big mod on a vintage amp that might not do what you want it to do. Shit, tone's 3/4 in the attack and fingers anyway

That being said, Fender has tweaked that circuit several times on the amps that have a standard master volume, and there are lots of other options along the lines of output attentuaters like the Hot Break, etc. My bassman is ludicrous loud, (although it is run through the orignial 4x12) and honestly if I was trying to replicate the sound of it breaking up exactly, I would invest my money in a high-end overdrive pedal rather than mod an old piece of equipment irreversibly...But that's just me.

Yeah, I've heard those Deluxe Reverbs can get stupid loud. I usually use a Mesa Single Rectifier boosted by a Digitech Bad Monkey into either a Mesa 4x12 or 2x12. I also have a Roland JC-120, Fender Hotrod and a Peavey Ultra Plus. As for guitars I have a Gibson Les Paul Gem, Fender Big Apple Strat, modded Fender Telecaster and a couple of Ibanez guitars.
